Founded in 1984 as a cooperative venture between the city of Boca Raton, Palm Beach County School District, FAU and Gumbo Limbo Nature Center, Incorporated, the Gumbo Limbo Environmental Complex is designed to provide marine and coastal environmental education for the community through classes, seminars, workshops, field trips and research. Education
Gumbo Limbo through the Palm Beach County School District conducts a formal program of theme-based marine environmental education to 3rd, 5th and 7th graders, as well as a floating classroom for high school students, available to public and private schools. Individuals can take courses, attend lectures, and visit teaching stations throughout the Center.

Nature Center
Stroll through the butterfly garden, climb the observation tower located on the winding boardwalk through pristine coastal hammock, and visit the saltwater tanks brimming with marine life, including sea turtles, fish and rays.

Sea Turtle Conservation and Research
The Boca Raton Sea Turtle Conservation and Research Program, founded over 30 years ago, conducts nesting activity research on 5 miles of Boca Raton's beaches from March to October.

Florida Atlantic University's Department of Biological Sciences

Dr. Stephen Kajura and his team of graduate students collect empirical data to investigate the true sensory capabilities of sharks and their relatives.

Dr. Marguerite Koch is studying the effects of high salt levels on seagrasses.

Dr. Jeanette Wyneken is doing a variety of sea turtle research such as the sex-ratio of hatchlings, swimming mechanics and anatomy.

Dr. Mike Salmon is studying the effects of lighting on the behavior of sea turtles as well as turtle behavior in their natural habitat.
