Gumbo Limbo Nature Center, Inc. – Open Position
Membership/Development Officer
(30 hours/week)

Are you good with people?  Can you easily explain why Gumbo Limbo is such a great place and why they need support?  We seek an organized, hands-on person who can help grow our membership and fundraising programs.  As an employee of the GLNC, Inc. Board, the work of our Membership/Development Officer, along with our Business Manager, helps us to continue to underwrite educational endeavors, conservation projects, and other critical initiatives for our unique coastal environment.

Interested?  You should have three to five years of membership and/or fundraising experience, the ability to create and maintain documents in the Microsoft Professional Office Suite, demonstrated written and oral communications skills, and a love of events and the outdoors.

GLNC, Inc. is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that supports the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center through fundraising, project development, and various other functions.  Our efforts have contributed over $100,000 annually to the Center’s mission. This is an important position in continuing our growth.

Gumbo Limbo Nature Center’s mission is to increase public knowledge of our priceless coastal and marine environments. Our 20-acre barrier island location serves over 100,000 annual visitors through the cooperative efforts of the City of Boca Raton, Palm Beach County Schools, and GLNC, Inc.

Job Title:
Membership/Development Officer

Reports to:
GLNC, Inc. Chair of the Membership/Fundraising Committee
Gumbo Limbo Nature Center, Inc. (GLNC, Inc.)
Boca Raton, Florida

Results Expected:
• Continued growth of membership beyond renewals [both in quantity and upgrades]. Goal to be set during annual review.
• Growth of donations from multiple sources [including members, grants, corporate, foundation, legacy].  Goal to be set during annual review.

Supervisory Responsibility:
Volunteers (if assigned by the Volunteer Coordinator)

Responsibilities:

Membership Strategy
• Work with Board, Fundraising Chair and Committee to determine strategies and a comprehensive annual plan for membership program
• Design and implement acquisition efforts including direct mail, on-site sales, and membership desk.
• Design and implement renewal upgrade efforts including direct mail and web-based.
• Develop and implement a support level membership campaign.
• Design any needed membership materials.
• Create and implement membership activities and events.
• Work with the newsletter editor to include membership information in each issue.
• Represent membership within the institution
• Make certain that the membership provides needed services to members.
• Create and produce press releases, ads, brochures, rack cards, etc. in conjunction with Business Manager, and others as appropriate.
• Cultivate members as potential donors.

Development
• Work with Board, Fundraising Chair and Committee to determine strategies and a comprehensive annual plan for development program.
• Find sponsorships for activities, projects, and events.
• Create and write copy for correspondence involving donors and potential donors.
• Research and write grants as necessary.
• Coordinate fundraising efforts.
• Produce membership and fundraising portions of the budget.
• Identify, cultivate, and solicit donors.

Database Work
• Stay up-to-date on the processing software.
• Develop reports for Membership/Fundraising Committee and Board on a monthly basis.
• Analyze reports and relate them to the annual plan.
• Train volunteers and staff on membership services.

Qualifications:
• College degree or equivalent experience.
• Three to five years of membership, fundraising, or related experience.
• Experience with volunteer assistance helpful
• Experience working with vendors of services such as printers, designers.
• Ability to work closely with volunteers, staff and other stakeholders.
• Ability to develop and analyze membership numbers and reports.
• Ability to budget.
• Organizational skills.
• Demonstrated ability to use MicroSoft Office (Word, Excel, Publisher) to create, manipulate, and design documents through final production.
• Able to work under general direction.
