Miami and the Pan-American Dream

Day Tripping with Gumbo Limbo is taking on another dimension; we are actively trying to make the travel part of the trips environmentally correct. Our autumn trips require a minimum of gas dependency. Trains are one of the ways we hope to take advantage of our historical and natural wonders. The cost of the trips covers entrance fees, donations and/or gratuities. TriRail train fare and lunch is at your own expense. A week prior to each trip participants will be contacted regarding train schedules and meeting times.

In the 1960’s Miami was in the midst of planning a city that would become the crossroads of the hemispheres. Known as Interama, the concept inspired city officials and planners, and attracted architects from around the world. Although a futuristic Miami was in the planning stages for decades, reality never happened. Fortunately, the architectural drawings and other materials were saved and have been assembled into a remarkable exhibit culled from the Historical Museum of Southern Florida’s archives. Two professors from the University of Miami’s school of architecture were the guiding curators behind the project.  The museum’s permanent installation, Tropical dreams: A People’s History of South Florida, dovetails the Pan-American Dream with a look at prehistoric geology, subtropical climate and subsequent dreams and development. The museum is in mid-town Miami next to the Museum of Art and the Library. A near-by restaurant, Granny Feelgood’s Natural Food, provides a favorite stop for lunch.  The MetroRail/Tri Rail station is one block from the museum.
