Marine Ecology of the Lower Keys: A Hands-On, Feet-Wet Experience
Ah, November! The waters are still warm, the threat of hurricanes has diminished, and the winter visitors have yet to arrive – a perfect time to be in the Keys. In the Lower Keys, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Gulf of Mexico, one finds different marine ecosystems from those along our Palm Beach County shores. The shallow waters around these near-tropical islands offer an excellent opportunity to learn about sea grasses, tide pools, and coral reefs.
Our instructors will be the staff at the Newfound Harbor Marine Institute. We’ll learn how geology has shaped the marine environments along Florida’s coast and in particular, the Lower Keys. Our activities will include wading and snorkeling, both near shore and on coral reefs, and a night wade to discover creatures not seen during the day. Be prepared to get wet – that’s what the weekend is all about!
Our accommodations will be at Parmer’s Resort, a small family-style motel with lodging in multi-unit cottages on nearby Little Torch Key. Continental breakfasts will be served there. Two lunches and one dinner will be included as part of our experience at the Institute.
