Pollution Solution

Build a small barrier island out of materials you collect on a nature walk. Disasters strikes! What materials can help clean up the mess? Test out different materials to save your habitat. Beach Jewelry

Open to all ages. An adult must sign-up and participate with children ages 10 and under. Come to Gumbo Limbo and let your beach jewelry creations become your own special treasures. It could be that cool surfer necklace you always wanted or that necklace to wear on a night out. Learn about and make your creations from shells, shark teeth and so much more - each piece comes with a piece of marine history. Rain Barrel Workshop

Looking for relief? How about a lower water bill, freedom from water restrictions, and that environmentally conscious gold star you’ve always wanted? Reintroducing… rain barrels. The ancient idea of harvesting rainwater for dry seasons is gaining popularity with tightening water restrictions statewide. Learn about this water catchment system designed to collect and store the rainwater that is normally diverted to storm drains, lost to evaporation, or restricted to a localized area. It is estimated that a rain barrel can save ~1,300 gallons of free water during summer months that can be used for a variety of purposes, from watering gardens and landscaping to washing your pets and vehicles. Sunflower Creative Arts’ Shakespeare for Everyone Presents “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”

Sunflower Creative Arts’ Shakespeare for Everyone Presents “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” Sunflower Creative Arts, in partnership with Target®, will present a performance of Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer’s Night Dream” at Gumbo Limbo Nature Center, 1801 North Ocean Blvd., Feb. 7, at 1:00 p.m. in the outdoor amphitheatre. The 75-minute adaptation will be performed by Sunflower Creative Arts’ new children’s repertory theatre group, Shakespeare for Everyone. Admission is free. Sunflower Creative Arts, in partnership with Target®, will present a performance of Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer’s Night Dream” at Gumbo Limbo Nature Center, 1801 North Ocean Blvd., Feb. 7, at 1:00 p.m. in the outdoor amphitheatre. CANCELLED - I am drawing with Pascal

We are sorry, but due to unforeseen circumstances, this event has been cancelled. We hope to bring it back in 2011. Have a budding artist, or a child that simply likes to doodle? Bring them to Gumbo Limbo to work on a painting of their own. Children ages 5-10 may enter an art contest by adding colors and other designs to an outline of one of Pascal’s paintings (winners announced at Sea Turtle Day on March 13).

Fifth Annual Sea Turtle Day

Join us at Gumbo Limbo on Saturday, March 13 for our Fifth Annual Sea Turtle Day. Celebrate sea turtles, marine life, and our oceans as well as our terrestrial species and habitats in a fun-filled family day of environmental education. All species and habitats are interconnected; learn what conservation actions you can take in your daily life to help make our world a better, cleaner place to live. This year we will focus on responsible fishing. Visitors will have the opportunity to visit our new sea turtle rehabilitation facility, which will be open for the first time to the public. See our sea turtle patients, which have been here since early January when they became cold-stunned. Learn more about them by talking to our sea turtle specialist, rehab technicians, and docents. Say hi to representatives from the National Save the Sea Turtle Foundation, one of the organizations that helped us get up and running.

Volunteer Training

Volunteering at Gumbo Limbo will give you the opportunity to become knowledgeable about nature indigenous to south Florida, while interacting with visitors from around the world. We offer a variety of classes for volunteers to learn more about the coastal island, hardwood hammock, and sea turtle conservation. The gift store is looking for volunteers who enjoy retail and have experience with computers. There is a mandatory, two part training session offered every month for new volunteers.

Boca Beachcombing

Limpets, lightning whelks and topsnails are just a few of the shells you can find on Florida’s beaches. Meet at Gumbo Limbo Nature Center for an introductory talk about seashells and the animals that make them. Then we will caravan over to Red Reef Park where we will walk the beach in search of ocean treasures.

Flower Pressing

Old-time botanists used plant presses to preserve specimens. Presses are still used by scientists, but today artists have appropriated pressed plants in innovative ways. Learn how to press flowers the old-fashioned time consuming way, and the newer, quicker way! Create a decorative container, a special note card, or a botanical collage.

Seining the Lagoon

Explore the grasses and flats of the Intracoastal Waterway behind Gumbo Limbo. Hand-held dip nets and large seine nets allow us to catch and release a variety of fish, shrimp, crabs and other marine life. Wear clothes that can get wet and old sneakers or wading shoes (no flip flops), and bring a change of clothes and shoes.

Egg Crazy Hunt

It’s spring, and many of the animals here at Gumbo Limbo are laying their eggs. Look at the many egg shapes and sizes and learn about the animals that lay them.  Then join us down in the butterfly garden to hunt and collect your own eggs. Early sign up is recommended.
