Story Tellebration!

Volunteer Training

Volunteering at Gumbo Limbo will give you the opportunity to become knowledgeable about nature indigenous to south Florida, while interacting with visitors from around the world. We offer a variety of classes for volunteers to learn more about the coastal island, hardwood hammock, and sea turtle conservation. The gift store is looking for volunteers who enjoy retail and have experience with computers. There is a mandatory, two part training session offered every month for new volunteers.

Bird Watching

These field trips are open to beginners and expert birdwatchers alike! We will visit a variety of habitat types in search of South Florida’s migrating and resident bird species.

Walk the Red Reef beach in search of ocean treasures. Angel wings, sundials, spiny jewel boxes, and fighting conch are just a few of the shells you can find on Florida's beaches. The program includes a seashell introduction, a walk on the beach, and a beach treasure in good condition.

Flower Pressing

Old-time botanists used plant presses to preserve specimens. Presses are still used by scientists, but today artists have appropriated pressed plants in innovative ways. Learn how to press flowers the old-fashioned time consuming way, and the newer, quicker way! Create a decorative container, a special note card, or a botanical collage.

Seining the Lagoon

Grab a net and find out what lives in the grasses of the Intracoastal Waterway at Gumbo Limbo. Hand-held dip nets and large seine nets help us examine a variety of fish, shrimp, crabs, and other marine life.
