In the 1960’s Miami was in the midst of planning a city that would become the crossroads of the hemispheres. Known as Interama, the concept inspired city officials and planners, and attracted architects from around the world. Although a futuristic Miami was in the planning stages for decades, reality never happened. Fortunately, the architectural drawings and other materials were saved and have been assembled into a remarkable exhibit culled from the Historical Museum of Southern Florida’s archives. Two professors from the University of Miami’s school of architecture were the guiding curators behind the project. The museum’s permanent installation, Tropical dreams: A People’s History of South Florida, dovetails the Pan-American Dream with a look at prehistoric geology, subtropical climate and subsequent dreams and development.

A documentary film about sharks is the focus of Gumbo Limbo’s day at the museum. The International Fishing Hall of Fame, located at the south end of Ft Lauderdale, is an interesting place to visit anytime but this trip is a special occasion to see Sharkwater. This timely picture depicts what the film makers discovered: these fascinating wild creatures have gone from predator to prey….”despite surviving the earth’s history of mass extinctions they could easily be wiped out within a few years due to human greed.”
